Career Exploration
is a prevocational program for ninth and tenth grade students from
the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District housed at the
Career-Tech Center. Juniors have been admitted under special circumstances.
Students are referred by principals, counselors, parents, caseworkers,
and probation officers.

Each
student along with their parents is interviewed before placement
into the class. The purpose of the interview is to allow the students
to have as much information as possible before they make a decision.
No student is placed in the program without his or her permission.
Each student is asked to make a commitment to good behavior and
academic achievement before entering the program.

Students
receive 1.5 credits/semester or 3.0 credits/year in the program.
They receive 0.5 English/reading, 0 .5 math, and 0.5 prevocational
(elective) credits/semester. However, these credits can be slightly
adjusted to meet students' needs. For example, a student who had
already fulfilled his/her math requirements could replace the
math credit with another English credit.

The
program is limited to 24 students. Twelve students attend class
from 9:20 AM to 11:50 AM. Another twelve come in the afternoon
from 12:20 PM to 2:50 PM. The session a student attends depends
on which session their home school has been assigned.

Students
have the opportunity to visit classrooms at the Career-Tech Center
as part of their career exploration unit. This gives students
a chance to experience programs they are interested in. Many Career
Explorations students have been placed in programs at CTC.
