Do you want to develop websites and create computer games?

WEB PROGRAMMING & DESIGN (WPD)
offers the opportunity to:
• develop actual websites.
• learn web programming.
• earn academic and college credit.

Computer Programming

Through a combination of individual and group assignments, hands-on projects, and job placements, students enrolled in WPD will begin developing basic web design and development skills.

As they progress through the program, students will learn about (X)HTML, JavaScript, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), Dynamic HTML (DHTML), and XML. In addition, they will use a variety of applications to build and test their web sites, including Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Fireworks and Flash CS4.

Examples of topics we will cover as part of the curriculum include ( but are not necessarily limited to):

  • Web page and web site design
  • Working with web graphics (Adobe Photoshop CS4)
  • Developing web animations (Adobe Flash CS4)
  • Building web sites with the web page editor Adobe Dreamweaver CS4
  • Incorporating CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) into your site
  • Building dynamic web sites with PHP (a popular open-source web programming language)
  • Integrating JavaScript with XHTML
  • Creating and using XML documents

The Web Programming & Design curriculum is designed to prepare students for internships, advanced study or careers in such fields as Graphic Arts, Interactive Media Design or Multimedia and Visual Communication.

Online Session
:  This session is delivered using a Moodle server—a system developed for/by teachers to offer online learning as part of their classroom activities (blended instruction).  We offer much more teacher/student contact than other online classes and the instructor and student are in contact almost daily.  The instructor is available to visit the student at their home school if necessary.

The curriculum is part of what is taught in the Web Design classroom environment at the Career- Tech Center.  We start at the beginning of web site construction by learning HTML coding.  Students create several web sites and build on them as each new technique or concept is learned.  They will build their own personal web site as well.   The Career Tech Center stresses work ethics and a work ethic component is an important part of this class.  It encourages each student to demonstrate a good attitude, show initiative and be dependable in the unique environment of an online class.  As part of this, a weekly work log is required and is an important evaluation tool.   Web ONLINE! – HTML can be a one or two semester class and the student can receive up to 1.5 credits per semester by completing the required number of modules and passing the tests with an 80% average.   Since credits are awarded based on the number of modules completed/passed in a semester’s time limit, this online class can be used effectively for credit recovery.  Students will be accepted at any time during the school year and their work production is individualized to meet the student’s specific needs.  Please feel free to contact the instructor, Janet Post, (231-946-1364) if you have questions or concerns.
