Incubation Room at the Platte River Fish Hatchery
Less-Than-Class-Size student Brandon (yellow jacket) is sorting the dead Chinook salmon eggs. The good eggs are returned to the trays (rows) where they are incubated for two months.

Employer-based programming (Less-Than-Class-Size) was initiated as an alternative to classroom instruction. LTCS contracted training is designed primarily for the delivery of programs not already available through existing vocational programs, using the local business community for instruction sites. New or unique occupations may more readily lend themselves to less-than-class-size contracting. A contracted program will have no more than four (4) students per instructor, per instructional site in the same time period. Students must provide their own transportation. High school counselors must recommend students for LTCS. Participants receive one and one-half credits per semester and are considered Career-Tech students.

"This program is perfect for me. Training at the Benzie County Sheriff's Department has been a great experience. It has given me the opportunity to get hands-on experience and also helped me to confirm that I do wish to pursue law enforcement as my career. I've learned a great deal from all of the professionals I've worked with. I would recommend this program to any student." —Daniel Pracher, former Frankfort/Elberta student

"We've been using the LTCS option for students since its inception. We have had several students take advantage of pursuing their career pathway successfully through this program." —Mike Walker, Glen Lake counselor

"Working as a Fisheries Technician at the Platte River Fish Hatchery would not have been possible if it wasn't for the LTCS program. I was glad to have the opportunity to be able to find out about this program and to check it out to see if it was right for me. It was exactly what I was looking for to end my last year in high school. I wanted to get the training I needed for the job and to receive high school credit at the same time. It not only gave me the opportunity to explore an interesting field, but I found it is something that I want to do for the rest of my life!" —Brandon Fast, former student
