Health Science Technology
The purpose of the Health Science Technology program is to
introduce students to the knowledge and skills required for
employment within the diverse health care field from nursing
skills to skills used by physical therapists and in the hospital
laboratory. Students will study a curriculum consisting of basic
skills common to many of the health occupations such as patient
and worker safety, communication skills, medical terminology,
anatomy and physiology, and basic patient care skills such as
vital signs and patient transferring, CPR and First Aid.
Employability skills are also included. During the second semester
students will have a four-week work experience at a health care
related work site. Students work one-on-one with a mentor putting
their newly acquired skills to use. The second year continues with
additional work experiences in a variety of settings. Advanced
medical terminology is included with opportunities to articulate
college credit. This project-based curriculum also enables
students to explore health care careers and topics of personal
interest.
Therapeutic Careers in Medicine
This is a one or two year course designed to teach students basic
health care skills including exploration of therapeutic careers
such as sports medicine, nursing, physical therapy, respiratory
therapy, dental and optometry, among others. Course work will
include safety, medical terminology, communication skills, health
and wellness, nutrition, anatomy and physiology, and employability
skills. Skills will include aseptic hand washing, first aid, CPR,
vital signs, athletic taping, bed making, ambulation and
transferring patients. Students will receive an American Red Cross
Sport Safety Trainer card upon completion of specific course work.
Students may also have the opportunity to transfer class and lab
knowledge into hands-on experience while job shadowing staff
members at area medical facilities. Second year students will have
additional opportunities to prepare for a college/career as they
may participate in co-op or extended work experiences at local
healthcare facilities.
